Most people don't know but Disney started censoring cartoons as early as the 1970's, way before the "politically correct" age of the 80's & 90's. Even if this “politically correct” age were to pass, it would not change Disney’s mind, for their mind was made up in the 70’s, even before it became an issue.     Not all censoring was due to Racial Stereo Typing, as in Song of the South and Fantasia. Some censoring was due to Disney’s desire for children to avoid guns or cigarettes; this was especially true in their Make Mine Music & Melody Time. Yet other forms were to conform to a certain image Disney wants to project, and thus Mickey Mouse becoming a monster in Run Away Brain was banned as soon as it was released in 1996. As it turns out, THESE ARE THE MOST FUN DISNEY’S TO WATCH.    While it is one thing to censor 30 seconds out of a 10 minute cartoon, or a segment from the movie Fantasia, it is quite another to completely ban an entire movie loved by the general public (last shown in U.S. theaters in 1986) while at the same time releasing it to Europe and Japan.   To further exasperate matters, this was one of Walt’s favorite movies and the number one Disney attraction “Splash Mountain” is based on it. Even in the inner circle surrounding the Life Size Bronze Statute of Walt & Mickey at Walt Disney World, there is Burr Rabbit and only 4 other Disney Animated characters. You can imagine the privilege of being chosen in the top 5 in of all the 74 years of Disney animation, only to get banned 16 years AFTER the statues were erected in 1971.   Ask any Disney expert what there favorite Disney Movie is and Song of the South will ALWAYS be in the TOP THREE. The film was flown into the conference and Roosevelt ordered it to be shown to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. It had a significant influence on the allied forces that adopted the strategy of the film in 1944. This strategy ended up winning the war and changed warfare forever.  As you may recall, we did not enter WWII until Dec. 11, 1941 When Japan Bombed Pearl Harbor. Practically speaking we did not really get started until 1942. Here's my quick, off the top of my head synopsis: This cartoon details the life of a Nazi youth from birth, freely mixing fact and fiction. "What makes a Nazi? How does he get that way?" is the question posed to the audience. Hans is a cute little boy (mostly expertly animated by Milt Kahl, great Pinocchio animator) who is brought over to the correct "Nazi" way of thinking. We see his parents bullied while trying to pick out a name, making sure to not pick one from the "Verboton" list. In school, he learns the "Nazi Fairytale" of Hitler "Picking up Germany and taking it for a ride" in one of the few funny sequences in the film (Animated by Ward Kimball). Germany is portrayed as a giant Viking lady who shoves Hitler's face between her breasts! Also in school, Hans is taught a story about a fox and a rabbit, in cute animated chalk drawings. When the rabbit is eaten, Hans shows sympathy, and he is made a dunce in his classroom. This angers the teacher (animated by Bill Tytla, in a scene very closely resembling his Stromboli animation) "The world belongs to the strong!" " I spit on the rabbit" say the other children. The film ends with Hans becoming a mindless soldier who doesn't see, hear or think for himself. The group of soldiers marches over a hill as we see a cross-dissolve to hundreds of grave markers. "His Education for death".. Runs a full 10 minutes!
