With an $18 million dollar jackpot in prize money,the '89 Winston Championship series attracted a whole galaxy of drag racing superstars including Butch Leal, Frank Iacinio, Kenny Bernstein, TomHoover, and the 'winningest' driver of them all, the legendary Bob Glidden who celebrated his 75th national-event win during the season. A massive crowd at Houston watched a great all-female duel between Shirley Muldowney and Lori Johns in which Muldowney's top-fueller became a ball of fire. Same thing happened to her again at Florida but she went on - in a blaze of glory - to beat her startled opponent. Although there are enough (non-fatal) incidents in this 2 hour epic to produce a couple of Havoc movies, the race-action, the interviews and the in-car sequences are simply terrific.
